In 1863 churchman Charles Kingsley wrote \The Waterbabies\" a moralising tale that included human 'do-as-you-likes' de-evolving back to apes (and further) because of their careless ways. Here a composite includes Kingsley's text from the first edition together with Linley Sambourne's later illustration. In it of one of the ape like degenerates is trying to stop a (Du Chaillu like) hunter from shooting him - but is unable to speak. Kingsley found no problem believing Darwin's thesis of natural selection. Many religious men of the time took special creation as allegorical, and thought God worked by natural laws which He had set in place."
