Sporotrichum lettauianum (W 1936/1629). Sporotrichum lichenicola Berk. & Br., J. Linn. Soc, Bot. 14 : 102 (1873). The type collection comprises a species of Phaeographina with pruinose margins to the lirellae on which there is a considerable amount of insect frass and eggs. Some superficial white mycelium is present and some ellipsoid hyaline conidia 3-5 1-5-2 urn were found but no conidiophores discerned. A sketch by Berkeley on the type sheet indicates that he found these to be branched in a manner reminiscent of Verticillium sect. Prostrata W. Gams, with the conidia borne singly and not in chains. 1 suspect this fungus to be very close to or conspecific with V. lecanii (Zimm.) Viegas, a primarily entomogenous fungus which is known to be very common in the Peradeniya Botanic Garden today (Gams, 1975). Its occurrence on the lichen thallus appears to be due merely to the insect debris present, and so this taxon is not accepted as a true lichenicolous species. The epithet lichenicola predates lecanii by 25 years but as some measure of doubt as to the identity of Sporotrichum lichenicola remains it should not be taken up for that well-known species. Keissler (1930 : 524) listed Sporotrichum lichenicola as a synonym of the species now called Athelia arachnoidea (Berk.) Jul. but this cannot be supported. There is no evidence that Keissler ever saw the original collection of the Sporotrichum in K. Stigmatella aurantiaca Berk. & Curt., /'/; Berkeley, Intr. Crypt. Bot. : 313 (1857). Type: , South Ca
