Hydroxide precipitates. Three test tubes containing, from the left, chromium (III), iron (III) and aluminium (III). All three test tubes have had sodium hydroxide added to them. This has caused the hydroxides of the metals to precipitate out of the solutions as solids. Addition of sodium hydroxide is used as a test for positive metal (III) ions in solution.
