Instruction in the East Jersey schools waslargely of a religious nature. The Bible and thecatechism were used as text-books, and these werestudied with thoroughness. But little attentionwas paid to the higher branches of learning, ex-cept possibly mathematics and a superficial read-ing of the classics.
