Pendant crafted from Lapis lazuli, a semi precious stone composed of the feldspathoid mineral lazurite, to which it owes the strikingly blue colour. It is formed by contact metamorphism in marble and limestone, near igneous intrusions. Pyrite and calcite are often adjoined or intermixed. Lapis lazuli is widely used as a gemstone in jewellery. Also small objects, such as animal figures, are crafted from lapis lazuli; polishing enriches the deep blue colour of the stone.
