William Osler as a medical student, 1870s. Canadian physician William Osler (1849-1919) was a student at McGill Medical School in Montreal, Canada, from 1870 to 1872. He began his career there before becoming the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. In 1905 he became a professor at Oxford University, UK. Considered the father of modern medicine, he contributed towards reforms of medical education, founding the practice of residency where medical students received practical training in hospitals. His 'Principles and Practice of Medicine' (1892) was a standard textbook for forty years.
