Angkor, Cambodia, satellite image. The city of Angkor was the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire. The site was abandoned sometime in the 15th Century. The large blue structure at left is the West Baray reservoir, built in the 11th century. At lower centre is the Angkor Wat temple, which was built between 1113 and 1150 AD by Suryavarman II. It is surrounded by a 174 metre wide moat (purple). The large square at centre is the inner royal city of Angkor Thom, which was built in the 12th century. Image obtained by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA's Terra satellite.
