Pluto. Computer artwork of the surface of Pluto, with the Sun (lower left) and Pluto's moon Charon (centre right) seen in the sky. The faint brown haze across the horizon is Pluto's tenuous atmosphere, composed largely of nitrogen with some carbon monoxide and methane. Pluto is the smallest and furthest from the Sun of the planets in the Solar System. Some consider it merely a large body in the Kuiper Belt, a cloud of rocky bodies which orbit the Sun beyond Pluto. Pluto and Charon are less than 20, 000 kilometres apart, and both always show the same face to the other.
