Colonoscopy. Surgeons using a colonoscope to examine the colon (large intestine) of a patient. A colonoscope is a flexible endoscope with fibre-optic illumination that is used to view the interior of the large intestine. The image seen by the endoscope is shown on the monitor at upper right. The endoscope is usually inserted through the rectum. The device may also be fitted with forceps and cutting instruments to retrieve samples for biopsy examination, or to remove polyps. Crohn's disease, ulcers and cancer of the bowel may be diagnosed in this way.
