This roll wasthe plan of Sydney Godolphin, esq. and made 1511.*. Ely bishop of Ely, whose see must formerly have been muchmore lucrative than at present, had one of the most extensive epis-copal domains in London, situated where Ely-place now , as the mansion was first called, and afterwards Ely-house,was built in consequence of a will of bishop John de Kirksley,who died in 1290, and left a messuage and cottages in Holborn tohis successors. The next bishop of Ely, William de Luda, pur-chased several houses and some lands, which he also left to thebishops of that see. Extensive gardens were laid out, and suchattention paid to horticulture by the resident bishops, that they werecelebrated for the choice fruit they produced. Shakspeare alludesto this circumstance, in the play of Richard IIL, when he makesGloster thus address the prelate, John Morton :— My lord of Ely, when I was last in Holborn,I saw good strawberries in your garden there,I do be
