It is in the fpirit of fuch a fciencethat I would propofe to make fome general obfervationson the literature which has been given to the world inthe Englifh language. Not that I can hope within thelimits of this le6lure, even were it poffible in the pre-fent ftate of our knowledge, to ertablifh with regard tothe caufes of our literature anything which could de-ferve the name of fcience.
