. Annals of the South African Museum = Annale van die Suid-Afrikaanse Museum . -E). Discussion Klinger (1976: 68) regarded the Angolan N. (N.) obtusum (Howarth 1965: 384, pi. 10(fig. 2), text-fig. 17) as a synonym of N. (N.) natalense. When compared with theholotype, Howarths (1965: 384) reasons for maintaining them separate— largetubercle, bold ribs and smaller umbilicus—seem reasonable. However, SAM-PCZ 18734(Fig. 1 IF) has an apical angle, open umbilicus and rib density indistinguishable from theholotype of TV. (N.) obtusum, and we consider N. (N.) natalense to be a senior synonym ofN.

All the specimens described by Basse (1931: 19, pi. 2 (figs 11-15)) as Turrilites(Bostrychoceras) schloenbachi are smaller than our smallest specimen. They definitelydo not belong to Favres (1869) N. (N.) schloenbachi (see Kennedy & Summesberger1987: 30-31 for a review of that species). The largest of Basses specimens (1931, pi. 2(fig. 15)), however, is very similar to SAM-PCZ 18737 (Fig. 11C-E).
