Square detail of a Romanesque stone capital, sculpted in around 1190 AD, in a cloister at a Benedictine monastery, the Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña, near Jaca in Huesca province, Aragon, Spain. The artwork is one of 20 Romanesque capitals in the monastery cloister by the same sculptor, known as The Master of San Juan de la Peña or Master of Aguero.
Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña, near Jaca, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: square detail of Romanesque stone capital depicting an Apostle holding a staff in both hands, one of 20 telling Old and New Testament biblical stories from the Creation to Christ’s Ascension, in a cloistered courtyard symbolizing a New Jerusalem. The capitals were sculpted around 1190 AD by an artist known only as the Master of San Juan de la Peña. The Benedictine monastery was founded under a bulging rock overhang in the Central Pyrenees by hermit monks fleeing the 10th century expansion in the Moorish occupation of Spain. The monastery stands on the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James Christian pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
