Joséphine de Beauharnais, first wife of Napoléon Bonaparte, and Empress of France, 19th century. Josephine (1763-1814) married Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798 and was crowned Empress of France in 1804. Josephine failed to provide Napoleon with a son, and in 1810 he had their marriage annulled so that he could marry Marie-Louise, daughter of Emperor Francis I of Austria.
