Light micrograph of a normal blood smear showing platelets, a leukocyte and red blood cells

Light micrograph of a normal blood smear showing a round aggregation of platelets (center), a polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) (large cell with a lobed nucleus left of center), and a number of red blood cells (RBCs); Mag. 1000x. The platelets themselves are very small blood elements integral in the clotting process, and formed within megakaryocytes from which are then released into the blood. Platelets contain no DNA, but do contain clotting enzymes, and energy-producing mitochondria. They can at times, be mistaken for abnormal blood components such as parasites when they take on unusual clustered shapes.
