FRANKLIN WOODBURY FISK, , ,President of Chicago Theological Seminary,was born in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, February16, 1820, son of Ebenezer and Hannah (Proctor)Fisk. On his fathers side he is descended from agodly and honored ancestry. His mother was adaughter of Deacon John Proctor of Henniker, NewHampshire, who came of old colonial stock. attended as a boy the public schools of hisnative town and afterwards Phillips Academy at .Xn-dover, Massachusetts, his attendance there extendingover a number of years interrupted by teaching to. FISK defray expenses. He graduated from Yale in 1849with the highest honors of his class, and then studiedtheology at the Yale Divinity School for three was a tutor in Yale from 1851 to 1852 ; spent UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR SONS 169 part of the following year in the study of theologyat Andover Theological Seminary, and then travelledabroad for some time. On his return from Europehe accepted the Professorship of Rhetoric and Eng-lish Literature at Beloit College, Wisconsin. Thisposition he held until 1859, and in October of thatyear entered upon the duties of Wisconsin Professorof Sacred Rhetoric in Chicago Theological Seminary,to which he had been appointed in January still holds this Professorship in the Seminary,and was elected its President in 1887.
