Polluted canal. Steel works on the bank of the Indiana Harbour Ship Canal. This canal, which was built in 1901, connects the Grand Calumet River to Lake Michigan and serves one of the biggest steel- producing areas in the world. Ninety percent of the water that passes through the canal originates as industrial outflow or stormwater overflow and is therefore heavily polluted with chemicals and heavy metals. Until 1972 the toxic sediment in the canal was dredged and dumped in Lake Michigan, but since then the sediment has built up. To combat this a 30 year dredging project, costing over $125 million, will start in 2006. Photographed at the Mittel Steel USA plant in Indiana Harbour, Indiana, USA.
