Inthe guide books of the eighteenthcentury this piece was described as The Spanish Generals Shield (ofthe Armada) not worn by him butcarried as an ensign of honour. Thestyle of engraving suggests that it isof English or Dutch BUCKLER OF BRASS (V, 53). 54-60. Seven Targets of Steel, to Windsor by command of His Majesty King Edward VIIin 1901. 61. Target of Steel, engraved with armed figures and arabesques ineight compartments. 62. Target of Steel, engraved with armed mounted figures in sixcompartments. Purchased in 1846. The last two examples are of questionable workmanship. They were,however, exhibited as genuine before the Society of Antiquaries in 1847by Mr. Porrett, Storekeeper of the Armouries. 63. Target of Steel (XVIth-XVIIth Century), engraved with thearms of Castille and Leon. Diameter, 22in. 64. Target of Steel (XVIth-XVIIth Century), engraved withradiating bands showing trophies of arms.
