Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington, was a British soldier and statesman. Wellington (1769-1852) fought in India; was a commander in the Peninsular War, driving the French from Spain, and defeated Napoleon I in the Waterloo Campaign. He also served as Prime Minister from 1828-1830. In 1842, he was made commander-in-chief. In this 1890s illustration, Wellington is shown reviewing troops belonging to the British Army.
