Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD), Roman naturalist and author, shown with some of the animals, minerals and plants described in his 37-volume encyclopedia Historia Naturalis. The title of the work is shown here in French. Based on two thousand books by nearly five hundred authors, the work covered zoology, botany, geography and astronomy.
