Caption: Yushu, Quinghai, China - Jul 2002. A Tibetan Khampa twirling a prayer wheel as he circumambulates the auspicious mountain above Thrangu Gompa, a small temple built by the first Tibetan King in 641 AD outside of Yushu. Many Tibetans twirl small hand held prayer wheels during the course of the day and especially when visiting religious shrines or attending festivals. The wheels contain a roll of paper with inscripted mantras and the worshippers believe that by twirling the wheel the prayers will be released into the heavens gaining them merit and appeasing the gods.
