A history of British birds, indigenous and migratory: including their organization, habits, and relations; remarks on classification and nomenclature; an account of the principal organs of birds, and observations relative to practical ornithology .. . of the work. A fewcircumstances however may be here mentioned as relating tothe wings. The breadth of the wing depends chiefly upon the length ofthe cubital quills ; its length principally upon that of the digi-tal. Considered as a whole, the wing may be very long, whileits bones are very short, as in Swallows, Fig. 29, and Hum-ming-birds, in which the cubitus in particular is extremelydiminutive. In some birds, as Gulls and Eagles, the humerusand cubitus are very long ; in others, as partridges, very short;and the same remark may be made as to the digital quills. The wing is short, broad, convex, androunded, in Grouse,Partridges, and otherRasores, Fig. 28 ;long, broad, straight, and pointed in mostPigeons. In the Pe-regrine Falcon, it isacuminate, the secondquill being longest,^ and the first littleshorter ; and in theSwallows is still moreso, the first quill beinglongest, and the rest rapidly diminished in length, Fig. these long, pointed wings, and the short, rounded ones.
