he war memorial in the East Sussex village of Burwash in the High Weald area of the County. It stands near the church of St Bartholomew at the eastern end of the village. The vast majority of the names remembered are from World War 1 but those from the village who fell in the second WarWar are also remembered. The memorial has a lantern that is lit on the aniversary of the death of everyman commemorated. The most famous name on the memorial is that of Second Lieutenant John Kipling of the 2nd Irish Guards who died on 29th September 1915 aged 18. He was the son of Rudyard Kipling who lived a short distance away at Bateman's. John Kipling was remembered as "My Boy Jack" in both poem and play. John died at the Battle of Loos, a military disaster for the body was never found. At first Kipling refused to accept his sons death and used his influence to ornaise searches for his son but to no avail.
