Explorer Robecchi-Briccheti in a sarcophagus photographed in 1880 by Luigi Fiorillo. Luigi Robecchi-Bricchetti, (May 21, 1855 - May 31, 1926) was an Italian explorer, the first European to cross the Somali peninsula (the Horn of East Africa). On his first African expedition, in 1886, he reached the oasis of Siwa, where he found a vast necropolis from which he collected skulls for European museums. He twice traversed the previously unexplored interior of Somalia. He donated his photographic archive, library, weapons, skulls, and artifacts collected during 30 years of travel and explorations to various museums, including the Ethnographic and Anthropological of Florence and Rome, and the Museum of Pavia. He died in 1926 at the age of 71. Photograph originally captioned: Archeologist impersonates a mummy.
