This is some-times called a straddle joint. These joints are usedon heavy timbers, such as the braces or struts in theold-fashioned method of framing a barn. It is a staunchway of building, but also an expensive way, for con-siderable skill is required to do accurate mortise-and-tenon work. Furthermore, since the joints are only asstrong as the thickness of the material in the tenons,when it comes to shearing stresses, many of the old tim-ber frames are not so strong as they appear.
