CONTRACTURE. Contracture is a coudition of the muscles which differs radicallyfrom contraction. In the latter the muscle is locked, as by fixationof a joint or by callus. In the former the muscle is contracted,but the contracture is not fixed, and can be overcome by gentlypressing upon the muscle, the contracting muscle giving to the exam-iners hand the sensation as of wax gradually yielding.
