Knee surgery scar. Three-month-old scar on the knee of a 75 year old woman. This is from a partial knee replacement operation known as a unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, which is used to treat arthritis of the knee. The partial knee replacement is a type of minimally invasive surgery. It is used on suitable patients when arthritis is confined to a limited area of the knee and offers major advantages over a complete knee replacement. There is a smaller incision, healthy parts of the knee are retained, recovery is quicker and the joint offers greater mobility. The partial knee replacement was pioneered in Oxford, England and is now widely used.
