Margaritone's Virgin and Child

This painting, in tempera on linen affixed to wood, was done by the Italian painter Margaritone d'Artezzo, or di Magnano, (1216-1293). Margaritone belonged to the Tuscan School and this painting is titled The Virgin and Child with Scenes from the Lives of the Saint. In the center is the Virgin Mary holding her son Christ, who blesses in the Greek manner. On the left top, the Nativity and St. John the Evangelist liberated by angels from the caldron of boiling oil. On the left bottom, the martyrdom of St. Catherine and her burial on Mount Sinai and St. Nicholas exhorting sailors to throw overboard a vase of oil given to them by the devil. On the right top: St. John raising Drusiana and St. Benedict haunted by the recollection of a beautiful woman he had seen in Rome plunging himself into a thick of briars and nettles to mortify the flesh. On the right bottom: St. Nicholas preventing the execution of three innocent men and St. Margaret swallowed and disgorged by the dragon unhurt.
