Repairs on a Bridge Bearing Box. By J. G. ok Bridges, Sailt Stk Marie, Ontario, Canada. One of the difficulties encountered in theoperation 0f t^e drawbridge No. 6, at Soo,Michigan, supervised and maintained bythe Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Rail-way, was in the rapid wear of the boltson the main driving pinion bearing DI FAILS in- BRIDGE BEARING BOX. The bridge was constructed in 1884, and tosay the least, bridge designing has beenconsiderably improved upon since thatdate. As shown in the accompanying il-lustration, the bearing-cap and the brasswere held in position by the use of fourone-inch bolts. The shafting being threeand five-eighths in diameter, bolts of oneinch in diameter were repeatedly provento be too light for the service. The troublehas been remedied by reboring the boltholes to suit bolts of one inch and a quar-ter in diameter, the bearing casting beingsufficiently large to admit of the increasein the size of the holes. Two holes werealso drilled and tapped in the angle-plateat each end of the bearing for one inchset screws, to aid in preventing any sidemotion fin the bearing. The work wasdone before the opening of navigationsome months ago, and during the periodthat has elapsed since tha
