New Jersey Shore Beach Reclamation Project, Monmouth, NJ (after Hurricane Sandy)

Beach reclamation, also known as beach nourishment, is the process of restoring a beach to its natural state by adding sand and sediment. This is often done to combat erosion caused by natural forces such as waves, tides, and storms, or by human activities such as coastal development. The process typically involves dredging sand from offshore or nearby sources, transporting it to the affected beach, and then depositing it in strategic locations to rebuild the beach's natural slope and shape. The sand is then smoothed and graded to create a new, wider beach with more space for recreation and natural habitats for wildlife. Beach reclamation projects can range from small-scale efforts to replenish a few hundred feet of shoreline, to large-scale initiatives that involve millions of cubic yards of sand and can span several miles. While beach reclamation can be costly and time-consuming, it is often seen as a necessary measure to protect coastal communities and preserve the natural beauty and economic benefits of beaches for generations to come.
