He was admitteda freeman of Newport July 29, 1713, but did not remain there,building a wooden house in Roxbury, after the model of thestone family mansion, in Datchet, England, on a smaller scale.^On the 18th of April, 1719, Colonel Brinley married DeborahLyde, daughter of Edward and Catharine Lyde, and grand-daughter of Judge Nathaniel Byfield. He died Nov. 27, had five sons and two daughters. His family were scattered. 1 News-Letter, February, his will, May 8, 1722, he leaves ;^30sterling to his mother, if she surviveshim, while his legacies to others are in Province Bills, which indicates thatshe was then living in England. Theusual confusion of him with his fathermay be due to the return of the elderJohn Valentine to that country beforehis death. The Advocate-General hadchildren, — Samuel, born Dec. 28, 1702,died March 14, 1781; married (i), June25, 1729, Abigail Durfee; (2) October,1766, Rebecca Hall: he was ancestorof the Freetown and Fall River familiesof the same name. Elizabeth, born , 1703, married, 1724, James, son ofCapt. James and Hester Gooch, of Bos-ton; John, born Nov. 8, 1706, died at Portsmouth, England, 1711, while hisparents were visiting that country; Ed-mond, born Jan. 16, 1709, died Jan. 30,1710-11; Thomas, born Aug. 3, 1713,married Elizabeth, daughter of and Hester Go
