The lines of both armies wereadvanced so near to each other that the pickets could not be advanced,and many men were killed and wounded daily in the Army of the Tennessee had approached Dallas from the westand was separated from the Army of the Cumberland by a gap ofabout three miles, which was defended by a division of the Four-teenth Corps, placed a little in the rear of the line.
