Intensive farming and use of dynamite . ently several charges fired at the same time will do more workthan the same charges fired successively, or than one charge as bigas all of the smaller ones combined. A very little thought will show that more work will be donewhen firing a number of blasts simultaneously than when firing themsingly, while a little experience will teach that much is to be gained 94 EXPLOSIVES AND BLASTING SUPPLIES by firing even single shots electrically. Another advantage gainedin firing by electricity is, that in case of a misfire (which can rarelyhappen by this method), it is unnecessary to wait a considerabletime before returning to the work, as must be done when usingfuse. Directions Use electric fuzes, leading and connecting wire, and blastingmachine, instead of fuse and blasting caps. The electric fuze wiresmust be long enough to extend several inches out of the bore hole, and care must be taken when tamping not to break these wires ordamage the insulation on them. If more than one charge is to be. METHOD OF CONNECTING TWO LEADING WIRES TO A THREE-POST BLASTING MACHINE fired at one time, separate the two electric fuze wires extendingfrom each hole and connect one of these wires to one extending fromthe hole on one side, and the other one to one of the wires extendingfrom the hole on the other side, and so on, until all are connectedtogether in a string, with one free wire extending from the first hole, and another extending from the last hole. If the electric fuze wiresare not long enough to reach each other, use a piece of connectingwire to join them. Be sure that all wire ends are scraped clean and bright beforethey are connected together. The charges having all been connected as directed above, thefree wire of the first hole should be joined to one of the leading^wires, and the free wire of the last hole to the other leading wire. 95 HANDBOOK OF EXPLOSIVES The leading wires should be long enough to reach a point at a safedistance from
