Monoamine oxidase and inhibitor complex, molecular model. Computer illustration showing the structure of a molecule of human monoamine oxidase B (ribbons) in complex with the multi-target monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) ASS234 (spheres) and the active dimer of the Alzheimer's drug donepezil (white, right). ASS234 inhibits the action of monoamine oxidase A and B, acetylcholinesterase and butyryl-cholinesterase enzymes, which are involved in the underlying biochemical processes of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Donepezil is used to help relieve the symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
