France, Somme, Baie de Somme, Noyelle-sur-mer, Nolette, Nolette Chinese Cemetery. Nolette Chinese Cemetery is a cemetery in the French commune of Noyelles-sur-Mer where Chinese civilian workers employed by the British army during the First World War were buried. With 842 graves, it is the largest Chinese cemetery in France and Europe. During the First World War, Noyelles was home to a major British rear base, including a large camp for coolies (Chinese immigrant workers). They were recruited by the British army between 1917 and 1919 as part of the Chinese Labour Corps, to work behind the frontline as labourers, although some of them also saw action in the war zones. They were forbidden to mix with the local civilian population. They were assigned to arduous and dangerous tasks, such as digging trenches, collecting soldiers who had died on the battlefield, clearing mines from reclaimed land, laundry work, health services for the sick, particularly those suffering from Spanish flu, and so on. Many of the men buried at Nolette died from a cholera epidemic in the camp, Spanish flu in 1918-1919 or tuberculosis, or were even killed in the combat zones (aerial view, Source: Wikipedia).
