Theystruck right and left, and in triumph bore the little ones off to the Thirty-fifthPreckicl Station House. The heroism of the New York firemen in these days of danger was thetheme of the public press and of all well-disposed citizens. While some build-ings were burning at Fourteenth Street and Avenue C, Assistant EngineerElisha Kingsland tried to remove a wagon in the street to make room for theapproach of a carriage. If you touch that wagon Ill blow your brains out, cried a ruffian, whowas backed by hundreds of his COLORED ORPHAN ASYLUM.[Burned down by Rioters, July, 1861.] The engineer got upon the wagon and shouted, If this fire continues, itwill cross the street and burn the houses of your friends. Get down from there ! Shoot him ! Mangle them! were the responses. Nevertheless, Mr. Kingsland gained his point. Again, at the corner ofTwenty-ninth Street and Broadway, Chief Engineer Decker, .AssistantEngineers William Lamb and Elisha Kingsland had a hand-to-hand fight witha big crowd. Lainb was knocked down, but his comrades set him on his feet, ami they finally succeeded in arresting three of the ringleaders who werestealing bales of silk. The Xeiv York Tribune, of July 20, 1863, sa3*s: During the progress ofthe fire on the corner of Second Avenue and Twenty-first Street, on Mondayafternoon [July 13] Lafayette Engine Company No. 19 were threatened by themob that if they attempted to extinguish the lire, or in any way endeavored tosave the building, they would be instantly stoned. Nothing daunted
