Artificial urinary sphincter. Coloured oblique 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of a 64-year-old man with an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS, purple). A urinary sphincter is a muscle that acts as a valve and controls the amount of urine leaving the bladder. This patient has had a prostatectomy (prostate gland removal), which damaged the sphincter and caused incontinence. The large ball at centre is a pressure regulating balloon, which enables the urine to flow at an even rate when the artificial valve is open. The smaller masses at lower centre are the artificial valve (left), and a pump (right) that is used by the patient to initiate urination.
