. Works of the Right Reverend George Bull, ... : concerning the Holy Trinity . n Affertion was true, thatthere was a time, when God the Father exifted withoutthe Word, or Son of God. And as from the Words ofJrenam lately alledged, namely, That Chrijl was always withMankind, you may rightly conclude, that Mankind neverwas, when Chrift was not; fo from thofe other Words, wherein he again and again teaches, that the Word wasalways prefent and exiftent with the Father; you mayjuftly conclude, that God never was, when the Word wasnot, and therefore that he is Eternal and without begin-ning. This alfo Irencem very clearly teaches, whiift herebukes the Valentinians, for tranflating the Pronounciationof the Word of Man to the eternal Word of God, allow-ing him only fuch a Proceffion and Nativity, as their ownWord, which hath a beginning. This he contends isabfurd, if the Word be God. If then he had attributedto the Word a beginning of Exiftence, or had denied hisEternity, the Charge would have fallen back upon him-felf, a Refledion we ftiould not make upon the CHAP. the NiCENE Faith.
