She nexttaught in the Wescott neighbor-hood and received but $16 a those early days it was custom-ary for residents in the district toentertain the teacher in the varioushomes. Mrs. Cantrill recalled thatshe was frequently a week endguest at the home of Mr. and Howard, parents of MarshallE. and George S. Howard, and that. Life moved along smoothly untilMrs. Cantrill, then Elmira Lee ofBangor, heard of fabulous wagespaid teachers in the middle made application for a schooland obtained a contract nearSpringfield, 111., at a salary of $100a month, amazingly high wages forthose early days, but teachers werescarce. Abraham Lincoln was Presidentof the United States when was teaching near Spring-field. She walked to her school every day, the route passing theLincoln home. The venerable lady recalls thatshe quite frequently met the greatLincoln on the Springfield streetsand that he was the idol of thecity. She vividly recollected themonster celebration staged inSpringfield when Lincoln waselected for a second term. Therewere torch processions, red fire andmuch speech making. The Presi-dent was on hand and she heardhim deliver an address. Mrs.
