Rabies vaccine. This vaccine is a lyophilised (preserved) suspension of inactivated rabies virus. When injected, the vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies, but without causing an infection. The immune system can then respond quickly to future infections by the virus, although with this particular vaccine further booster injections may be required. The vaccine is usually only given to those who are travelling to high risk areas or work in high risk environments. It can also be administered effectively after exposure to the virus.
