USS Holland (SS-1) submarine in drydock, 1900. This submarine, designed by Irish engineer John P. Holland (1841-1914), was originally launched in 1897 as Holland VI. It was purchased on 11 April 1900 by the US government for 150,000 US dollars. It was then modified and commissioned as the first US Navy submarine on 12 October 1900 at Newport, Rhode Island, USA. The first commander was Lieutenant Harry H. Caldwell. The USS Holland was used mainly as a training submarine. It was decommissioned in 1905 and struck from the register in 1910. Sold as scrap metal in 1913, it was reportedly exhibited until broken up in the 1930s.
