The library of historic characters and famous events of all nations and all ages; . ntiquity ofthe Bayeux Tapestry, which is almost conclusive as to thefact of its being executed under direction of Matilda, the wifeof the Conqueror, says truly: If the Bayeux Tapestry benot history of the first class, it is perhaps something exhibits genuine traits, elsewhere sought in vain, of thecostume and manners of that age which, of all others, if weexcept the period of Reformation, ought to be the most in-teresting to us; that age which gave us a new race of mon-archs, bringing with them new landholders, new laws, andalmost a new language.
