Ireland's crusade against tuberculosis; being a series of lectures delivered at the Tuberculosis Exhibition, 1907 . thisgas is being used, and though a very high percentageis present in the air, such a percentage as would provefatal if produced by respiration, no inconvenience isexperienced. At every inspiration we take in nitrogen, oxygen, and a little of this gas. At every expiration wesend out nitrogen, far less oxygen than we took in, andmuch larger quantities of carbonic acid gas. That is justthe point to remember, that at each inspiration, at eachbreath drawn in, we take in oxygen from the air and giveback carbonic acid gas in place of the oxygen we took amount of carbonic acid gas is being increased ateach breath one hundredfold. While the air we takeinto the lungs contains 4 volumes of carbonic acid gas inevery 10,000 volumes the air we breathe back from ourlungs contains 400 volumes in every 10,000. Now thiscarbonic acid gas is accompanied by a certain amount ofsolid matter. This matter readily putrifies and becomesan additional evil influence in expired air.
