SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2016) — Sailors and Marines man the rails as the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) prepares to depart Naval Base San Diego for a scheduled deployment. Makin Island is a part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, which will serve in the 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleet area of operation, providing maritime security operations, crisis response capability, theater security cooperation and forward naval presence.
