Geocentric cosmology, artwork published in Specula Physico-Mathematico-Historica (1696), an encyclopedia of science by the German monk and author Johann Zahn (1641-1707). The text is in Latin, while the diagram shows the Earth at centre, circled by the Moon. The next orbit is occupied by the Sun (upper centre), which has Mercury and Venus orbiting it rather than the Earth. The third orbit is Mars, with the outer two orbits taken by Jupiter and Saturn. Beyond the planets are celestial spheres, culminating in the fires of the Caelum Empyreum.
