For many years the Kiowa war-riors roamed freely over the entire Arapahoe andComanche country, extending from the South Platteto the Brazos. Their favorite rendezvous seems tohave been the valley of the Arkansas near the mouthof the Purgatory River. The Kiowas were littleknown by name in the early fur trade, but prob-ably many an atrocity charged to the Comanchesor the Arapahoes was really committed by thesewanderers. A late authority refers to them as beingthe most predatory and bloodthirsty of the [38].
