Exercise Fig. 28. — Productionof carbon dioxide bygerms in soil. (A) tightstopper, (B) flask con-taining limewater, (Osmall bag containingmoist soil suspended fromstopper, (D) limewater. Production of carbon dioxide by bacteria. Materials.—Flask, limewater and moistrich soil. Procedure. — Place a small amount oflimewater in a flask and then suspend inthe flask over the limewater a bag of rich, moist soil. Stopper tightly and allow tostand for a week. Note the turbidity of thebmewater. Explain the results. Exercise IV.—Temperature and color. Materials. — Coal dust and calcium hy-drate. Thermometers. Procedure. — Divide a small plat ofsmooth, level soU into three one part untouched, cover one with athin coating of coal dust and the other witha coating of calcium hydrate. On a warm, sunny afternoon take the temperatures ofeach at one, three and six inches and give a practical explanationof the data obtained. Exercise V. — Slope and temperature. Materials.
