Amber. Hand holding amber found on a beach in Charente-Maritime, France. This region of France contains lower Cretaceous (100 million year old) deposits where amber (fossilised resin from conifer plants) is found in abundance. This amber is clear, however most of the amber found in this region is opaque and requires a powerful X-ray to detect animals or plants that became trapped when the amber first existed as a sticky resin.
