Close-up view of a male hoverfly (Melanostoma scalare) resting on a flowering plantain in a damp meadow habitat on an early morning in mid summer. Hoverflies are named for their ability to hover in air by beating their wings rapidly. Its black and yellow stripes mimic the warning colours of a bee or wasp, which predators avoid. This type of mimicry is known as Batesian mimicry. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in July.
