Replica of "The Amsterdam" cargo ship in Amsterdam, Holland
"The Amsterdam" was an 18th-century cargo ship of the Dutch East India Company. It started its maiden voyage from Texel, Holland to Batavia (which was the capital of the Dutch East Indies and now modern day Jakata, Indonesia) on th e 8th January 1749, but was wrecked in a storm on the English Channel a few weeks later. The shipwreck was discovered in 1969 in the bay of Bulverhythe, United Kingdom, and is sometimes visible during low tides. The wreck site is protected under the Protection of Wrecks Act since 1974. Some of the findings from the site are in The Shipwreck Museum in Hastings. A replica of the ship is on display in Amsterdam.
